Year Levels 5 – 10


We work within the Department of Education and Trainings’ Guidelines to deliver either primary or secondary school Drug Education Programs

 

Overview:

The Drug Education program is designed for students in primary and secondary schools, providing age-appropriate education on the effects of drugs, decision-making, and strategies for navigating peer pressure. The program empowers young people with the knowledge and skills to make informed choices about substance use, understand the risks, and support their wellbeing and that of their peers.

Program Objectives:

Understanding Drugs & Their Effects:

  • Explore legal and illegal substances, including caffeine, analgesics, alcohol, nicotine, and vaping products.

  • Learn how different substances affect the brain, body, and decision-making.

Peer Pressure & Informed Decision-Making:

  • Identify the social influences that lead to substance use and discuss strategies to resist peer pressure.

  • Build confidence in making safe and healthy choices.

Recognizing Risks & Consequences:

  • Examine the short- and long-term impacts of drug use on physical and mental health.

  • Discuss the risks associated with vaping, including how companies market these products to young people.

Supporting Friends & Seeking Help:

  • Learn how to recognise signs of concern in a friend or loved one.

  • Explore strategies for having supportive conversations and accessing help when needed.

Program Features:

The Drug Education program is structured to meet the needs of different age groups


Primary School (Years 4–6):

  • Introduction to legal drugs (caffeine, painkillers, alcohol, nicotine).

  • Understanding why people use substances and how they affect the body.

  • Managing peer pressure and building self-esteem.

  • Early education on vaping and its health effects.

Secondary School (Years 7–12):

  • In-depth exploration of drug classifications and their effects.

  • Understanding addiction, harm minimization, and legal consequences.

  • Peer pressure, social influences, and strategies for staying in control.

  • The rise of vaping, industry marketing tactics, and informed decision-making.

Outcomes:

By the end of the program, students will:

✔ Understand the effects of different substances on their body and mind.
✔ Recognize the influence of peer pressure and build confidence in making informed choices.
✔ Be aware of the risks of vaping and how companies target young people.
✔ Know how to support a friend and where to seek help if needed.
