Talking with students about gender equity and the expectations society places on people based on gender.
Our ‘Cool Guys’ Program (6-10 weeks) was developed to talk with students about gender equity, the expectations society places on people based on gender and when these expectations cause problems for how we treat ourselves and others.
Program Objectives:
Redefining Masculinity: Students will explore the concept of masculinity, examining societal norms and expectations while understanding the importance of being true to oneself.
Emotional Awareness: Through various activities and discussions, participants will learn to identify and express their emotions, breaking down barriers that often prevent open communication.
Building Healthy Relationships: The program emphasizes the significance of respect, consent, and effective communication in fostering positive relationships with peers, family, and the wider community.
Promoting Inclusivity: Students will engage in discussions and exercises that highlight the value of inclusivity and diversity, encouraging acceptance and understanding among all individuals, regardless of gender.
Program Features:
The Cool Guys Program incorporates the RRRR framework—Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships—developed by the Department of Education. This framework serves as a guiding principle throughout the curriculum, ensuring that students not only understand the core values of positive masculinity but also apply them in their daily lives.
Resilience: Students develop coping strategies to handle challenges and setbacks, building their ability to bounce back from difficulties.
Rights: The program emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting individual rights, promoting a culture of fairness and equality.
Respectful Relationships: Participants learn the significance of healthy relationships, focusing on communication skills, empathy, and mutual respect.
The program includes interactive workshops that combine discussions, group activities, and reflection exercises. Each session is designed to be age-appropriate, ensuring that concepts are relatable and accessible for students across various grade levels. The program also encourages active participation and collaboration, allowing students to learn from each other and share their experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
Outcomes:
Participants in the Cool Guys Program will leave with a greater understanding of themselves and others, equipped with the tools to navigate their social environments with confidence and compassion. By promoting positive behaviours and attitudes, the program aims to contribute to the development of a supportive and respectful community for all.
